How Jen Made Time to Hit ALL her Fitness Goals
Have you ever been overwhelmed by lofty fitness goals you’ve set for yourself? When I started my fitness journey, I was very busy. I was interning more than 20 hours a week and I was going to school full-time. I wanted something I could stick to. So, I tried a TurboKick class and I absolutely loved it. But I knew that if I was really serious about this, I’d have to make it a priority. I did. These 5 simple tips helped me make time to hit my fitness goals and get inspired!
Set S.M.A.R.T. goals
There’s nothing less motivating than being stumped by a lofty goal at the beginning of your fitness journey. The S.M.A.R.T. criteria guide you into making goals you’ll be able to crush. Your goals should be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely. Setting clearly defined goals in the beginning really helped me stay on track and keep focused throughout my journey. Setting achievable goals helps you monitor short term and long term progress.
Start a fitness goal journal
When I started, I took to writing down all my efforts in a fitness journal. I started by putting my S.M.A.R.T. goals and my starting statistics on the first page. Every day after, I would note what exercises I did and what I ate that day. I reflect on it weekly, to make sure my efforts are still aligned with my goals. It reminds you of the million little good choices you make throughout each week.
Integrate exercise into your daily routine
Make exercise an everyday thing. Treat improving your health as a checkbox that needs to get done, any way you see fit. Morning exercise makes me feel energized and ready to take on my busy work schedule. Start biking to work, stretching before you leave the house, or make the gym a stop on your commute to work. I’ve found that I’m more motivated to go to the gym if I don’t stop at home first. Some days I leave for work early and go before, or I’ll work out before I head home.
Exercise has an amazing impact on much more than your muscles. Take ten minutes after a workout to reflect on how you’re feeling. Notice the immediate benefits of your efforts. Exercise relieves stress, improves your mood, and helps you feel more alert & energized. Being mindful of the positive effects of exercise on mental health is a great motivator to keep you on track to hit all your fitness goals.
Keep good company
You can achieve every goal you set out for yourself by yourself- but having a support group that’s working towards the same goals as you is advantageous. If you’re best motivated by others, start your fitness journey with a partner or some friends! Making healthy changes with a loved one is not only a fun way to spend time together, but it’s also a great use of your time. If the thought of walking into a huge gym and not knowing what to do is intimidating, try group workout classes. They’re instructional, motivating, and challenging.
